Carrier of a Cameroonian number
MTN, Orange, Camtel or Nexttel? Paste a number, get the operator and the price of the SMS.
No sign-up, no usage limit.
This calculation is exactly the one the API returns before every send.
How the carrier is determined
A Cameroonian mobile number has nine digits and starts with 6. The carrier is written in the digits that follow: the ART allocates ranges by prefix, and that plan is what the API uses to route a message and to price it.
Reading the first three digits is not enough. The 654 and 688 ranges are split into five- and six-digit sub-ranges, some of which are allocated to nobody: 65460 is MTN, 65461 is not; 688960 is Orange, 688965 is not. That is why resolution always keeps the longest prefix covering the number.
What the tool does not tell you: it reads an allocated range, not a subscriber. It has no way of knowing whether the line is active, and a number ported to another carrier would still show under its original range. Only the response of a real send states the carrier that was finally used.
The full numbering plan
All 58 rules as the API applies them. The price shown is the price of one segment.
| Carrier | Allocated prefixes | Price / segment |
|---|---|---|
| MTN | 650, 651, 652, 653, 6540, 6541, 6542, 6543, 6544, 6545, 65460, 65468, 65469, 6547, 6548, 6549, 67, 680, 681, 682, 683 | XAF 5 |
| Orange | 655, 656, 657, 658, 659, 686, 687, 6880, 6881, 6882, 6883, 6884, 6885, 6886, 6887, 6888, 68890, 68891, 68892, 68893, 68894, 68895, 688960, 688961, 688962, 688963, 688964, 69 | XAF 5 |
| Camtel | 620, 621, 6220, 6221, 6222, 6223, 6224, 6225 | XAF 7 |
| Nexttel | 66 | XAF 7 |
| Default route | Any prefix missing from the rows above | XAF 10 |
Both the rules and the prices can be changed by the service administrators; the pricing page always shows the rates in force.
An unallocated prefix is not an error
When no rule covers the number, the API does not reject it: the message goes out through the default route, recorded under the DEFAULT carrier and billed XAF 10 per segment. Worth knowing before importing a contact file: an unknown prefix costs more, it breaks nothing.
An invalid number is a different matter and is rejected before any debit: fewer than nine digits, not starting with 6, or a landline. The API then answers 400 INVALID_NUMBER.

No endpoint exists for carrier lookup alone: the carrier comes back with the send itself, in the operator field of the response.

Is a number starting with 654 always MTN?
No. The 6540 to 6545, 65460, 65468, 65469 and 6547 to 6549 ranges belong to MTN. Numbers starting with 65461 to 65467 are allocated to no carrier at all and go out through the default route.
Can I choose which carrier sends my SMS?
No. The message is routed to the sending configuration matching the recipient's carrier, and that carrier is what sets the per-segment price.
Will the recipient see my company name?
No, they see the number of the SIM that sent the message. G-SMS carries transactional messages from real numbers: there is no custom sender ID.
One account is enough to send your first message: instant API key, 100 XAF of free credit.
